Sidmouth, a charming coastal town on Devon’s Jurassic Coast, is home to one of the most enchanting floral displays in the country—the Valley of a Million Blooms. Every spring, this picturesque landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colours as daffodils, bluebells, crocuses, and snowdrops burst into bloom. For nature lovers and photographers alike, this breathtaking spectacle is not to be missed.
The Story Behind the Valley of a Million Blooms
Who Inspired It?
The Valley of a Million Blooms is a testament to the extraordinary generosity of Keith Owen, a Devon native who had a deep connection to Sidmouth. After a career in the RAF, Keith spent much of his retirement traveling the world, but always returned to Sidmouth to visit his mother and enjoy the town’s timeless charm. In 2007, after being diagnosed with a terminal illness, Keith made a lasting impact by leaving his retirement savings to the Sid Vale Association with one clear instruction: "Think big! Plant a million bulbs—and involve everyone!"
Why Sidmouth?
For Keith, Sidmouth represented a piece of quintessential England. He wanted his gift to preserve the town’s beauty and bring the community together. His vision became a reality through the collective efforts of local volunteers and the Sid Vale Association, transforming Sidmouth into a haven of blooms each year.
A Community Blossoms
The Valley of a Million Blooms is not just about the flowers; it’s a reflection of Sidmouth’s vibrant community spirit. Every autumn, local schools, families, and community groups come together to plant bulbs across the Sid Valley. From public parks to countryside trails, these efforts ensure the town is alive with colour when spring arrives. Popular spots like Peak Hill and The Byes become picture-perfect locations to enjoy these stunning displays.
